Affinities is our first project undertaken in the city of Porto, Portugal, which is the second home of Estúdio Caxa.
At the invitation of BOMBARDA - Creative Quarter, we were asked to create the visual identity for the Affinities project, an exhibition developed in partnership between the Creative Quarter and the National Museum Soares dos Reis. The association brings together shopkeepers, artists, studios, and creatives from the Rua Miguel Bombarda area, located in Cedofeita, Porto. Known for its art galleries, this region is a cultural hub and a center of the city's creative economy. Since the museum is also located in the same area, Affinities was conceived as a way to incorporate it as a part of this neighborhood.
An open call was made for contemporary jewelry artists to create pieces inspired by works from the museum. The submissions were judged by a jury, and the selected pieces are now part of the exhibition at the museum. After a public vote, one of the works will be chosen to become part of the museum's permanent collection. Additionally, workshops and other activities are planned to help integrate the local community with the museum and vice versa.
For the development of the exhibition's visual identity, we used the silhouette of the sculpture Bust of Firmino in bronze and plaster, along with its illustrations, as the basis for our creation. By enlarging, rotating, repeating, and coloring, we created layouts with layers and abstract shapes. The diversity of colors also serves as a reference to contemporary jewelry, which features various types of materials and forms in its creation. In this way, we drew a parallel with the concept of Affinities: bringing inspiration from the museum's works to the creation of new objects within the realm of contemporary jewelry.
